Dropping Rakes

Dropping Rakes (also known as Dipping Rakes or Slamming Rakes) symbolizes a gesture of disrespect aimed at the Gangster Disciples (GDs) gang. The GDs are associated with the pitchfork, also referred to as rakes, and they use a specific hand sign to represent this symbol. Enemies of the GDs often mimic this hand sign but invert it, a gesture known as "Dropping Rakes" or "Throwing Down Rakes," among other terms.

Origins and Symbolism

The Gangster Disciples originated in Chicago, Illinois, and their influence extends across the nation. This makes it common to see rappers, particularly those involved in Drill music, displaying the rake hand sign to show allegiance to the GDs. Conversely, rival factions, particularly those aligned with the GDK (Gangster Disciple Killers) movement, are known for dropping the rakes as a defiant act.

Cultural Impact

The act of dropping rakes is not confined to Chicago; it is prevalent in other regions as well. A notable example can be seen in Bobby Shmurda's "Hot Nigga" music video, where members of the Gangster Stone Crips drop rakes, reflecting their ongoing conflict with nearby GD factions. This act has become a widespread cultural expression within certain communities, transcending music and influencing the dynamics of gang relations across the United States.
